PARAMARIBO - 20,000 students have reportedly applied for the special allowance of SRD 1,000. Some of the students have already received the initial allowance of SRD 800...
chairman of the presidential committee tasked with Study Allowance, told Times of Suriname that the maximum number of students that can apply for the allowance has already been reached but that a proposal to expand this number has been presented because there are still students who are filling out the registration form. The payments are done via the Uni5Pay wallet system and via transfers to bank accounts.
Lalmohamed pointed out that not all of the students have received the allowance yet. About 1,500 students who had filled out the registration form still have not received the allowance. “These students will receive it this week,” said Lalmohamed. There is an age requirement as students who apply for the special allowance must turn 18 by August 31, 2025 and must not be older than 30. Applicants must have the Surinamese nationality and they must also be enrolled at a public school in Suriname where they receive an education on secondary junior or senior level or higher education.
Lalmahomed explained that not all of the students who are in the system automatically qualify to receive the allowance because the allowance is basically meant for students who are unemployed and who are still dependent on their parents.
