explanation from the government. They explained that this allowance helped them to cover expenses. The allowance which was introduced by the previous government was intended for all of the students who are 18 years or older and who are enrolled at a school that is officially registered at the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. The project was frozen in August 2025. Since then there has been no word about the continuation of the project. Although some people claim that SRD 1,000 is not enough to make ends meet, the students made it clear that it makes huge difference to them. “With that money I could pay for copies at the print shop and I could also pay for the bus rides,” said a female student who is enrolled at a high school located in Paramaribo. “Now I have to work after school to earn some money which I can use to cover expenses.”

Many students claim that they stopped receiving the allowance shortly after the elections of May 2025. Other students complained that they never received any money although they had applied for it. The students made it clear that they hope that the government will once again lend them a helping hand in the form of the allowance of SRD 1,000.
