PARAMARIBO - The National Army (NL) of Suriname received three aluminium boats, outboard motors, safety gear and two trailers from the French army. It will use the donated equipment to beef up the river patrols on the Marowijne River.
General Werner Kioe A Sen told Times of Suriname that he was grateful for this gesture from the French army. “The regular security on the Marowijne River will be beefed up,” said Kioe A Sen who added that the do action is part of the existing bilateral cooperation between Suriname and France. In 2024 the army created a special unit to carry out border operations. “It is important for Suriname to have its own boats and a special unit to carry out its tasks on the Surinamese side of the border.” The army reportedly used traditional canoes to patrol the river in the Eastern part of Suriname.
