BROKOPONDO – An operation aimed at evicting illegal prospectors out of the gold mine of Zijin had a tragic outcome last...

Sunday morning. Two prospectors died when they fell from a ‘mountain’ while trying to flee. 27-year-old RK died on the scene while SD died on the way to the hospital. Meanwhile the authorities have launched an investigation into the events that triggered the fatal incident. The company has put all its operations on hold until further notice. The incident took place when workers of the mining company tried to get the intruders out. Preliminary reports indicate that eight trespassers were caught while two died when they tried to flee. The officers from the Brokopondo Police Department received the call about the situation at the Royal Hill mine around 8 a.m. They were told that about 100 prospectors had assembled around the body of one of the victims and that the situation was tense. Police officers rushed to the area with a special police team and officers from the forensics division. Upon arrival at the mine a police inspector urged the group to calm down while other units focused on securing the scene and the body. The body of RK was at a location that could not be reached easily but mountain climbers and several prospectors managed to recover it before it was taken to the morgue at the Academic Hospital Paramaribo (AZP). The eight people who were arrested, were released after they had been questioned. The investigation is ongoing.
