Many clients stood waiting in line in front of the bank as they made unsuccessful attempts to go inside. One of the clients explained that he had been told that the security guards were on strike which is why the main office of the bank was closed. Many clients expressed their frustration in response to the unexpected closure of the bank. Some of them explained that they had taken a day off to put their bank affairs in order and that they were therefore extremely disappointed. Others made it clear that the first couple of days of each month are very important to many people who have to pay their bills, receive their wages or white money to other accounts. De Surinaamsche Bank (DSB) was not the only bank that was closed because the Surinaamse Postspaarbank (SPSB) also announced that its main office and regional offices were closed. Around 1 p.m. the SPSB announced that the clients could once again rely on its services. Hakrinbank NV confirmed that there was a strike. As a precaution the bank had decided to keep its regional offices closed until further notice. Only its main office that is located along the Dr. Sophie Redmondstraat was open for business. Not all of the banks were hit by the strike. Last Wednesday it was business as usual at Volkscrediet Bank NV (VCB), Finabank and Republic Bank Suriname NV. The strike reminded everybody how heavily the banks rely on their security guards.
