Government seeks payment arrangement at state companies:

Bills from EBS and SWM keep piling up

PARAMARIBO – The government reportedly has not paid its utility bills for quite some time. In some cases the bills from the Energy Company (EBS) and the Surinamese Water Company (SWM) have not been paid since 2020.

The government is reportedly trying to pay off its debts via a payment arrangement. Vice President Gregory Rusland confirmed that the matter has been discussed by the Council of Ministers (RvM) and explained that the state companies can no longer afford not to get paid on time for services rendered. The government is therefore discussing paying off its electric and water bills in phases. The SWM desperately needs the government to pay its high water bills as it needs the money to expand its infrastructure in several districts including the Commewijne District. The EBS is also facing financial problems and has repeatedly explained that it lacks the funds that are needed to expand its capacity to generate more electricity. Due to the increasing demand that it cannot keep up with the EBS has resorted to loadshedding. The EBS recently announced that it had no other choice than to increase the frequency of its loadshedding. EBS Director Leo Brunswijk recently hit back at parliament after MPs had criticized the EBS for its poor performance and its loadshedding policy. He revealed that government institutes including parliament failed to pay their electric bills which is why the EBS is currently under huge financial pressure. Natural Resources Minister David Abiamofo also confirmed that there is a lack of funds needed to increase the capacity to generate more electricity.
