PARAMARIBO - The chikungunya outbreak has officially reached the epidemic status along the west coast of neighboring French Guiana and reports indicate that Saint Laurent...

has been hit the hardest. 80 percent of all of the infections have been reported in the border town which is an important port for the transportation of people and goods from and to Suriname. According to Public Health France, there have been 143 confirmed cases since January and most of these cases were reported in the western region. There have also been reports of confirmed cases of chikungunya in Albina, Suriname’s borders town which is located across the river from Saint Laurent. There have been hundreds of chikungunya cases throughout Suriname. The rapid spread of chikungunya in neighboring French Guiana has triggered a large scale campaign in its border region and fumigations are part of its strategy. Fumigations have also started in Suriname as the Public Health Bureau recently received the necessary chemicals and tools from neighboring Brazil. Local officials pointed out that the fumigations could be carried out for the next six to twelve months and that additional supplies are underway.
