have to pay a fine of SRD 1,500 for driving with tinted car windows. They claimed that this measure not only adds to their financial burdens but that it also poses a threat to their personal safety. Entrepreneurs who regularly transport money, documents or other valuable goods explained that tinted car windows offer protection against potential robbers. They fear that they could easily be targeted without the protection of their tinted car windows. “Without tinted car windows we risk being recognized, followed or robbed. Entrepreneurs must also be able to protect themselves when they carry out their daily activities,” said an angry resident from Nickerie. The residents not only condemned the hefty fine but they also condemned the manner in which the rules are applied. Several citizens claim that “not everybody gets the same treatment from the police.” They pointed out that the police do not take action when they spot the private cars of certain officials. The citizens made it clear that the rule of law must apply to everybody because nobody is above the law. They want the minister in charge of such things to evaluate the situation and to make sure that the law is imposed in a fair, transparant and consequent manner.
