PARAMARIBO – On the eve of the start of the school year 2026-2027 Education, Science and Culture Minister Dirk Currie emphasized that “nobody must be left behind...

in the education system and that education must be accessible to everyone who want to opt for self development.”
“These are not just pretty words but aspects that determine the direction that we want to follow,” said Minister Currie who added that each child in Suriname must be given the opportunity to develop his or her talents and to develop these talents optimally. Although no solutions have been found for each and every challenge, Currie claimed that the education is better prepared at the start of this new school year than it was last year. He thanked everybody who worked hard to ensure a smooth start of the new school year. He explained to pupils and students that “each day at school is an investment in oneself.” Minister Currie also urged them to show discipline and determination and to make an effort, set goals, believe in themselves and to ask for help when that becomes necessary. According to Minister Currie, parents and caretakers also play an important role which is why he urged them to encourage their children, show interest in their performance at school and to inspire them to follow their dreams. “Together the school and the family form the strongest basis for successful youths,” said Minister Currie who also expressed his appreciation to teachers and school principals. Minister Currie pointed out that teachers and principals are entrusted with taking care of the most valuable possession of the community namely the children. He acknowlegded that the social and financial recognition for the work that teachers do is not yet where it should be.
