KABALEBO - Kabalebo District Commissioner Kevin Bronne recently revealed that there have been multiple talks with boat owners, speedboat owners and transporters about the safety on the river.

The existing rules regarding the maximum number of passengers and the maximum amount of freight that may be transported were repeatedly mentioned at these talks. According to the DC, some boat owners follow the rules while others do not. “Each boat owner is responsible for everything that is on his or her boat. You carry the responsibility of knowing the maximum amount of goods that can safely be transported. You cannot bring along freight, if you know that you cannot transport it safely,” said DC Bronne who seems it regrettable that unsafe situations still exist despite multiple warnings. The rules will be discussed again with the boat owners to emphasize their importance. DC Bronne has also discussed the boat inspections with Nickerie DC Nisha Kurban. Last Friday a boat carrying people from Apoera sank in the river.
