PARAMARIBO – The Traffic lights at the corner of the Van ’t Hogerhuys- and the Willem Campagnestraat have been offline for some time and it turns out that a glitch is not the culprit.
Public Works and Spatial Planning (OWRO) Minister Stephen Tsang explained that the problem is caused by a delay in the payments to the entrepreneur who is tasked with the programming and the maintenance of the traffic lights. According to Minister Tsang, the entrepreneur switched off the traffic lights.
“The problem is that the traffic lights are controlled by an automatic switch to turn them on and off. Each change or reprogramming must happen via the entrepreneur and that costs a lot of money. Money that we do not have at the moment. This has resulted in a delay in payments and we also do not know exactly how much money must be paid. I have spoken to the department to find out if there is another way to program the traffic lights. One that does not cost that much but it will take a while for us to find a solution. Meanwhile the traffic lights are out and we find that awful,” said the minister who expressed grave concern as the situation puts the safety of drivers, passengers and pedestrians at risk. Meanwhile the police have been tasked with directing traffic at the intersection in question.
