PARAMARIBO - The entrepreneurs from the Lawa region expressed their shock over the fact that a deadly armed robbery had claimed the life of a policeman.

They made it clear that “something must be done to tackle the rising crime rate in the hinterland.” The entrepreneurs revealed that they have not felt safe in a long time and that the recent incident has amplified their fear. “What can we do when even a policeman is not safe?” The entrepreneurs explained that they are filled with fear when they open from business each day because they do not know what could happen. The situation has not only affected them but it has also affected the economic stability in the Lawa region. The entrepreneurs pointed out that when they have no other choice than to close their doors, it will have huge consequences for many families. Workers will become unemployed and the local community will also have to travel long distances to buy stuff at other businesses. The entrepreneurs therefore urged the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Justice and Police to beef up their presence in the Lawa region. They want more units to patrol the region but they also want a faster response in case something happens such as an armed robbery. According to the entrepreneurs, they were relieved when it was announced that both ministries would launch Operation Marbonsu to tackle crime in the hinterland. Sadly, they have not noticed any difference. “We have not noticed any difference. Crime is still rampant and we still live in fear.”
