of homeless people that scare off customers. Anthony Lee, treasurer at the association that represents store owners and entrepreneurs, WOVS, explained that the situation differs from person to person. Some homeless people are peaceful and do not cause any problem while others are aggressive towards the entrepreneurs, customers and passersby. Lee emphasized that the store owners can’t just chase the homeless people away. “There are a few homeless people who are not annoying and who are not a problem but there are also others who are aggressive.” Another problem that the store owners face every day is the litter that the homeless people leave behind in front of their businesses. “The homeless people rip open garbage bags to look for food and stuff that can still be used,” said Lee who added that the store owners have to clean up the mess every day. “We have to keep out environment clean but we cannot keep doing it every time,” said Lee who added that the homeless people also urinate and defecate near or in front of their store. “The stench is unbearable.” The homeless people become aggressive when people do not give them money and they also touch women without permission. “The homeless people are becoming increasingly aggressive. The government must come up with a structural approach to this problem. A shelter is a possible solution because the homeless people would be given food, clothes, counseling and a roof over their heads.”
