consumed by the fire. It is still unclear what caused the fire. But the spokesman of the Fire Department Suriname (KBS), Olton Pinas, revealed that the fire department had received calls about a fire at the school on multiple occasions earlier this week. “The first call came in last Saturday. On Sunday there was another fire. Last Wednesday the fire managed to spread and destroyed the entire right wing of this public primary school. Local residents rushed to the school with buckets of water as they tried to put out the flames but their attempts were futile. The director of AVO, Gracia Valies-Ormskirk, announced that officials are working on a temporary solution so that the pupils can keep attending school. About 280 pupils are currently without a classroom. At least 7 classrooms are needed to accommodate them. Education Inspector Sandra Panka has contacted the Evangelische BroedergemeenteSuriname (EBGS) and the Rooms Katholiek Bijzonder Onderwijs (RKBO) to find out if they can lend a helping hand. Ronnie Brunswijk has reportedly provided a location but officials must first find out if it is suitable for pupils. Besides classrooms the pupils also need furniture, books, chalk etcetera. The director pointed out that “I do not know if the guards were present when the fire broke out.” She found out that the firefighters were not in Moengo when the fire broke out but in Albina to put out a fire at an apartment.
