Videos and audio material is increasingly being recycled with artificial intelligence (AI) in order to create and spread false information with the sole purpose of misleading the public. The president who has also been targeted by people who create fake videos with AI pointed out that she is not bothered by such videos but explained that things become problematic when manipulated material is used to link controversial statements to people although the people in question never made such statements. These are cases of defamation which is in fact punishable by law. The head of state made it clear that the uncontrolled publication of such material could have huge and negative consequences for the nation as it undermines the trust that people have in the authorities and public information.

“If one makes an AI video of a policeman, the president or a minister making a certain statement which that person never made that is in fact a forgery and that will be made punishable by made,” said the president who added that legislation will be passed to tackle this wrongful use of AI.
