The state mining company made it clear that it no longer wants to wait for the final results of the investigation into the mass fish deaths before taking action. It also made it clear that the fact that it provides potable water does not mean that it acknowledges its involvement in the mass fish deaths. The statement of the state mining company comes after the government has formally pointed the finger at the state mining company for causing the ecological damage. Grassalco pointed out that it takes the matter very serious and also expressed grave concern over the mass fish die-off and its impact on the local communities. It explained that its priority is aimed at minimizing the consequences of the contamination of the Moeroe Creek and the Saramacca River. The company also pointed out that its support could be expanded whenever new needs arise. Meanwhile Grassalco is also starting to look for answers regarding the cause of the contamination. It has launched an internal investigation that is led by its Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) department. The company has also hired an independent company namely SEPCO Industries to launch an investigation. Grassalco made it clear that the mass fish deaths took place in an area that is 15 kilometer from the location where mining activities are carried out. The company does not believe that there is a direct link between its activities and the enviornmental damage. It expects the investigation to be concluded within the next 6 to 8 weeks.
