PARAMARIBO – The Ministry of Social Affairs and Housing (Sozavo) has been hit by yet another scandal due to the misappropriation of funds that were intended for the destitute.

Workers who were linked to dubious actions were replaced but it seems as if even their replacements can’t resists the temptation when they get access to funds that are meant to help the poor. Recently the new head of the department that handles the payment of Welfare to poor people, AUSV, was removed from office because she had unlawfully withdrawn money from clients. The person in question had been appointed to the position by the minister of Social Affairs and Housing, Diana Pokie, after a scheme involving the Money Cards was uncovered. The minister swiftly took disciplinary measures against the person whom she had appointed. “She crossed the line. I had appointed her about four or three months ago. And she was the head of the AUSV. I have taken appropriate measures,” said Mnister Pokie. Meanwhile the person in question is under investigation because one of the victims has pressed charges against her. “I am also considering pressing charges because there are enough indications,” said Minister Pokie who clearly seemed disappointed. “If you cross the line, I can’t protect you. The law must be obeyed and we will make sure of that,” said Minister Pokie. The incident comes at a time when the ministry is already under a magnifying glass due to irregularities that were uncovered at the same department.
