PARAMARIBO - An investigation has been launched into the large scale deforestation in which Mennonites are allegedly involved and the preliminary reports indicate that at least one...

form of illegality has been detected. President Jennifer Simons pointed out that her administration has launched a thorough investigation into the activities and projects. She also pointed out that “these are not isolated cases but a broad pattern of deforestation”. “I have launched an investigation and it has been reported that some of the people who are cutting down trees are not there legally”, said the head of state. The president's response was triggered by growing pressure from parliament. Legislators and in particular those from the coalition asked questions about the progress and legally of these projects. Members of the coalition and in particular the National Democratic Party (NDP), the party of the president, strongly objects to these projects. The leader of the NDP faction, Rabin Parmessar, and MP Iona Edwards (NDP) have repeatedly urged the government to put an immediate stop to the activities in the hinterland and warned that the continuation of these projects violates the rights of the indigenous groups and would also cause irreparable damage to the environment. When the previous administration was in office there were also fierce debates about the large scale deforestation projects but no effective measures were ever taken back then.
