explained that his party has selected prefab houses that cost USD 10,000 or more. He pointed out that the prefab houses cover about 57 square meters and that they have two bedrooms and can be expanded with a balcony. The PL has selected 3 to 4 models and will put 2 models on the premises of its headquarters so that people can see them up close. Somohardjo explained that the houses are for people who find it difficult to build their own house. “We want affordable houses for the people,” said Somohardjo, who added that the PL has discussed financing options with a local bank. The plan is to let people pay USD 100 every month for their home until they have paid off the ‘loan.’ After having paid off their debt for 10 years, the house will officially be their property. According to Somohardjo, the PL has established a housing cooperation. “Although the party has established cooperation, it is not intended for PL members only. It is for everybody,” said Somohardjo. After a person has selected a model, signed an agreement and has received green light from the bank, an order is placed. “The houses arrive in Suriname two months after the orders have been placed,” said Somohardjo who added that the party will also help people who do not have a small piece of land to build their house upon to get one at the Reeberg Project. Somohardjo has already discussed this with President Jennifer Simons. The president is reportedly willing to make lots available for the project. There will, however, be certain conditions to make sure that people do not sell their houses and that they use the land for the intended purpose and nothing else. The PL is also searching for land at other locations beside the Reeberg Housing Project.
