PARAMARIBO - The Ministry of Justice and Police (Juspol) will take additional measures to maintain law and order in and around schools.

In the past couple of weeks videos of fights between students have gone viral. In some cases the students were reportedly armed with machetes. Justice and Police Minister Harish Monorath said that this development is cause for concern. He also pointed out that “there is a pattern.” “This is not the first conflict. There have already been more than 10 cases of fights between students,” said Minister Monorath. Reports indicate that in some cases students from the same school got into a fight with each other while in other cases students got into physical altercations with students from other schools. The Ministry of Justice and Police has received a proposal from the Security and Support Division Suriname (BBS). The proposal is aimed at improving the safety in and around twenty schools. “The BBS has handed in a program and we have already launched it,” Minister Monorath said. Officials aim at getting the project to be fully operational after the Christmas vacation so that the school areas could be safe again.
