PARAMARIBO - “Those who cross the line and who embrace corruption will face the consequences of their actions,” the chairwoman of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, told the members of her party.
Simons who is the first ever female chairperson of the purple party made it clear that no exceptions would be made for prominent members of the NDP. “If you are a top member of the NDP who steals money, I will not protect you. You will go to the attorney general,” Geerlings-Simons told the members of her party who will become part of her administration within the next couple of weeks. She also warned political opponents who plan on dragging the NDP and her administration through the mud with false accusations. The chairwoman of the NDP made it clear that her party will counter these attacks via the communication channels that are at its disposal. “We will not let others spread lies about us. We must respond and we must unravel them in a clear but proper manner. We will not tolerate lies,” said Geerlings-Simons who will also implement a zero tolerance policy on smear campaigns against her state policy.
Geerlings-Simons who is currently the president elect and the first ever future female president pointed out that there is much work to be done. Although the NDP will run 6 ministries, collaboration with other sectors will be essential. Geerlings-Simons called on the private sector and the unions to be actively involved. “The gold sector and the financial sector will also have to let their voices be heard and they must also present proposals. One does not have to be a minister to help do the work.”
