at the China-Nepal border, when a glacial mountain collapse sent a tsunami-like surge of water, mud, and debris through the region. The flood killed more than 1,400 people and left roughly 5,600 missing. According to Nepal's disaster agency, rescuers have recovered 1,385 bodies with about 5,130 still missing; in China, 43 deaths and 519 missing have been reported. The combined toll stands at 1,428 dead and over 5,649 missing, including around 800 foreigners such as tourists and pilgrims. Foreign ministry spokesman Lok Bahadur Chhetri said about $57.67 million is needed for short-term recovery over the next six months, while roughly $4.71 billion is required for longer-term reconstruction. A comprehensive post-disaster needs assessment is underway to determine the full extent of loss and damage. Nepal's leaders are calling for long-term international support to adapt to a rapidly changing mountain environment. Prime Minister Balendra Shah said Nepal must "strongly raise" climate-change-driven disasters with the international community, and is expected to address the UN General Assembly on the issue this month.
