is reportedly receiving assistance from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). The assistance is aimed at carrying out specific lab tests to pinpoint the exact cause of these fish deaths. The NMA which has reportedly expanded the area from which it collects samples for lab testing is also working closely together with the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Labor. The assistance from the PAHO/WHO must ensure that the lab tests are carried out in accordance with strict international standards. The NMA explained that the collaboration contributes to the full protection of the public health and the ecological system. It also pointed out that a thorough scientific research is essential before conclusions regarding the cause of the mass fish deaths can be reached. No high concentration of mercury, lead and cadmium were found in fish samples. No high concentrations of cyanide and mercury were found in the fish water samples either.
