The legislators from the VHP which is the only party in he opposition sent a letter to Chairman Ashwin Adhin to warn him that Suriname is headed towards a risky financial situation while crucial information is unavailable. They made it clear that “the situation is urgent and alarming.” The concern of the legislators from the opposition was triggered by the fact that the government is opting for financial commitments although the 2026 national budget still has not been presented to parliament and the people. They explained that fundamental decisions are made while parliament lacks the information to do its job as watchdog. “There exists no transparent picture of the actual pressure on the budget and the future debts,” said the MPs of the VHP.
