PARAMARIBO - According to residents from neighborhoods that are often flooded during the rainy season, the dry season is the perfect time to tackle the drainage issues.

They fear that if nothing is done now, the problems will pop up again during the next heavy rainfalls. The residents are therefore urging the state agencies that are tasked with cleaning the drainage systems to start as soon as possible. Several drainage systems are clogged as a result of thick grass and the illegal dumping of garbage. The residents do not want officials to wait for their neighborhoods to be flooded before taking action. “Now that everything is dry, they can get to work. Why do they want to wait for the streets to be flooded?” The residents explained that the flooding not only causes much inconvenience but that it also damages homes, roads and vehicles. The stagnant water is also cause for much concern as it could become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
