Students must share classrooms

PARAMARIBO – The new school year has had a rocky start as the students at several schools have once again received an adjusted schedule.

Times of Suriname

Due to the shortage of classrooms not all of the students can attend classes five days a week. The principals at overcrowded schools have no other choice than to do ide the classes and to let the students share the classrooms. As a result of this system one group of students attends classes two or three days a week while the other group attends classes three to two days a week. Parents are infuriated by the fact that there have been no improvements and are puzzled by the return of this problem every year. There are also schools where the students only four days a week which means that they have to stay home at least one day every week. “It seems as if education officials do not address the issues. One of my children has to go to school two and sometimes three days a week while another child of mine still cannot attend classes due to the shortage of classrooms”, said a concerned parent who added that the current situation triggers uncertainty within families and that they have to adjust their daily schedules frequently. Several school principals confirmed that the available room at their school is not enough to accommodate all of the students. They explained that there are classes with about 40 students and that this creates a difficult situation for students as well as teachers. In most cases there simply aren’t enough classrooms, chairs and tables for all of the students. The principals therefore have to opt for emergency solutions. One of those solutions is to let students share the classrooms and to have the various groups of students take turns attending classes two to three days a week. Although this system allows all of the students to receive education, it also means that they are not physically present at school five days a week. Many parents expressed concern regarding the impact of this system on the performances of their children at school. Teachers also expressed their concern because the system forces them to teach twice the number of students and therefore puts more pressure on them. It is not easy to give an equal amount of attention to a class with dozens of students. Parents and principals explained that the problem requires a structural solution and that officials must anticipate the problems before they can pop up. They deem it unacceptable that schools have to come up with emergency solutions at the start of each school year. Parents want to know when the Ministry of Education Science and Culture will solve the problem so that their children can go to school five days a week.
