it had decided to grant an extension on the adjusted schedule for schools which means that the schools will also close early in November or at least until November 15th. Teachers explained that the heat becomes noticeable in the morning and that it affects the students’ ability to concentrate. “The heat in the classrooms is unbearable. Why don’t they do anything to make things bearable?” The Education Ministry explained that the extension is based on the reports of the Weather Service of Suriname. The shortened school days are aimed at limiting the consequences of the high temperatures. The nation’s teachers explained that students find it increasingly difficult to concentrate on the lessons after 10 a.m. Some students use their exercise books or their stencils as a fan. Some of the teachers explained that they therefore adjust their lessons after 10 a.m. The sweltering heat makes people wonder if the students still absorb the lessons after 10 a.m. when the circumstances have changed. Besides the heat the teachers also complained about the lack of oscilating fans and AC units in the classrooms. “When there are many students packed in one classrooms the heat becomes more unbearable.” Although the schools close at noon instead of 1 p.m. the problems in the classrooms so not go away. The teachers therefore hope that officials will also address these problems.
