PARAMARIBO – “Together the entire NDP, NPS, PL, BEP and A20 only have 28 seats. They could determine who would become the chairman and the deputy chairman of parliament.
If they want to move forward, they will need the ABOP to get Jennifer
Geerlings-Simons elected as president in parliament,” said the chairman of the ABOP, Ronnie Brunswijk. Brunswijk who is the newly elected deputy chairman of parliament does not rule out the possibility that he would present himself as second candidate for the vice presidency, if his party does not get a fair chance to obtain one of the positions of power. He recently gave a fierce response during an interview with the host of the radio program which is known as Bakana Tori at LIM FM. Brunswijk strongly rejected the criticism aimed against him and his political party. The criticism was triggered by his public statement that the ABOP was entitled to one of the top three positions of power in the new coalition.
Brunswijk claimed that he is still holding talks with the chairwoman of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, but made it clear that she acted hastily when she promised the vice presidency to the chairman of the National Party Suriname (NPS), Gregory Rusland. “It was premature and problematic. One must only make promises after everything has been discussed. Now she must call Rusland back. We must talk so that we can make a joint decision,” said Brunswijk who wants to renegotiate with Geerlings-Simons. Brunswijk also does not rule out that he will get a legislator from the VHP to support his candidacy for the vice presidency if the NDP does not support him. “Things could go in any direction. I will present myself as candidate and I will enter the race. I know that there are risks. If I lose, I will end up in the opposition. And if I win, nobody can remove me as VP,” said the chairman of the ABOP.
