PARAMARIBO- The chairman of ABOP, Ronnie Brunswijk, recently sent a strong message at an event aimed at commemorating Chandrikapersad Santokhi, former president of the Republic of Suriname...

and chairman of the Progressive Party (VHP). This message made the entire nation and especially his current coalition partners frown. Brunswijk revealed that the bond between the ABOP and the VHP which is currently the only party in the opposition is tight and that there are plans to keep working together for the development of Suriname. He made it clear that “I do not care what the current coalition thinks about that”. “You do not have to afraid. The VHP and ABOP will go on. As long as I am leader of ABOP we will continue with the VHP”, said Brunswijk. After the general elections of May 2025 the other political parties that reeled in parliamentary seats formed an alliance against the VHP. ABOP was the last party to join the alliance but Brunswijk made it clear that the bond with the VHP and its chairman would remain strong. That message became louder in the past couple of months and Brunswijk removed all doubts at the funeral session. “They may hear it even the NDP may hear it”, said Brunswijk who never kept it a secret that he still remained in contact with Santokhi despite the fact that ABOP is part of the current coalition and government. Brunswijk revealed that he and Santokhi had already made plans for the future and that a new alliance was part of these plans. “We had made many plans”, said Brunswijk. Contrary to what other parties of the coalition are saying, ABOP claims that Santokhi has done a lot for Suriname including the hinterland and the coastal regions where tribal communities reside. “I am grateful for what he has done. I have seen many changes especially in the hinterland. We brought electricity from Commewijne to Albina. When Chan became president we got electricity 24/7 along the entire road. Even at Atjoni and beyond.”
