PARAMARIBO- It is still not clear who will be presented as the presidential candidate by opposition party NDP which is convinced that it will form the new government within the next couple of days.
Deputy Chairman Ashwin Adhin who is also a former vice president keeps holding on to his candidacy and does not plan on dropping out of the race to make room for the chairwoman of the NDP, Jennifer Geerlings-Simons. He made it clear that the party must work as a team.
But things are vague internally because even the person who pulls the strings in the party does not have a clear answer about who is the party’s presidential candidate. The big political parties traditially present their own chairperson and the person who is number one on the list of candidates as the candidate for the presidency. Simons is the chairwomen and she is also on top of the list of candidates but Adhin strongly believes that he should have that right. Adhin does not question the capacity of Geerlings-Simons to run the country but he explained that he is also capable. “My strength lies in the execution, in running things. I have 12 years of experience. I have managed bigger organizations. My strength is that I work fast and that I have carried out more difficult projects. Everybody has his or her strength,” said the self proclaimed presidential candidate of the National Democratic Party (NDP). An election campaign has also been launched within the NDP by people who want Adhin to be the party’s presidential candidate. The group that is loyal to Ramon Abrahams also supports Adhin’s candidacy. Ramon Abrahams and Simons e VHP people want Krishna Mathoera who is the current minister of Defense to be chosen as the party's presidential candidate instead of chairman Chandrikapersad Santokhi who is currently the president of Suriname. The only difference between the two internal election campaigns is that the one in the NDP is more ‘aggressive.’
