PARAMARIBO- The building where the National Transportation Company (NVB) is located at the Heiligenweg in Paramaribo is currently under construction.
Construction started in May while some of the employees of the NVB had to show up at the office. Management reportedly promised to move the employees to a modified container so that they would not have to sit in the building that is under construction. The employees complained about the danger to their health and safety and therefore went on strike last Tuesday. They made it clear that they will stay on strike until the container that was promised to them has been delivered. The employees protested after a wall had been erected because the building became too hot. A section of the wall was demolished in response to their protests. The construction workers recently started demolishing the ceiling and the roof. Both the employees of the NVB and the construction workers were getting annoyed as they were getting in the way of each other’s work. Most of the employees had already been moved out of the building but some of them were still left in the building while it was being demolished. last Tuesday the union decided to take action and issued a strike. The strike has no effect on the transportation services.
