water body. The move drew sharp criticism from Canadian officials, who called the escalating cross-border tensions "absolutely backwards." Canadians will still see the Indigenous-rooted name ‘Lake Ontario’, used since the 17th century, while users outside both countries will see both names, Google said. The dispute stems from the latest chapter of Trump's ‘America First’ narrative, unfolding amid an intensifying trade war between the longtime allies. Washington and Ottawa have traded tit-for-tat tariffs. On Sunday, Trump launched fresh criticism at the auto industry, even though US and Canadian auto manufacturing sectors are deeply interconnected, with substantial Canadian parts in US-made vehicles. "I don't want Canadian cars, I don't want Canadian parts, I don't want Canadian anything”, Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Google said it updated its maps to reflect the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), the federal database for official geographic names. The change mirrors Trump's January 2025 unilateral renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, a move Mexico has also rejected. Ontario is the smallest of the five Great Lakes by surface area. Ontario Premier Doug Ford harshly condemned the move, comparing it to something out of the comedy show ‘Saturday Night Live’ and insisting "no one's going to call it Lake America." He warned that while a trade war would hurt both countries, it would be "definitely devastating on the US," since Canada is the largest purchaser of US vehicles—threatening US auto factories if those purchases dry up. "A tariff on Canada is nothing more than a tax on American people”, he said. Trump, meanwhile, touted Ford Motor Company's Detroit-area plant assembling F-150 pickups and threatened to double tariffs on auto parts to 50 percent. Many F-150 engines are built in Windsor, Ontario. Canada has responded with counter-tariffs ranging from 15 to 50 percent, deepening the dispute between the historically close allies. (Bssnews)
