PARAMARIBO – Justice and Police (JusPol) Minister Harish Monorath recently announced that he has ordered a thorough investigation into the alleged theft of money out of the safe at the Narcotica Brigade.
“I have asked for a thorough investigation,” said Minister Monorath who added that the media reports which indicate that $300,000 was stolen are not true. Minister Monorath who had summoned Police Commissioner Bryan Isaacs told Times of
Suriname that something vanished out of the safe and that an investigation was launched. He did not rule out that those who are responsible would face disciplinary measures and even prosecution. Minister Monorath and Commissioner Isaacs discussed the theft of things that were locked inside the safes that are at the Narcotics Brigade and the Munder Police Station.
The thefts were reportedly detected in April but went undetected for several months. They recently made headlines. “Everything and everyone must be put in the spotlight during the course of the investigation,” said Minister Monorath who added that he has asked that the investigators focus on the past 7 to 9 months.
Minister Monorath explained that he is careful when it comes to sharing information because he does not want to influence the investigation.
“That is why at this point I do not share any details about the number of coworkers.” The minister did reveal that investigators already have a list with the names of potential suspects. He also pointed out that he has given Commissioner Isaacs instructions aimed at preventing such incidents from happening again. “We want this to be tackled in a different manner and for the police force to take the necessary steps.”
