PARAMARIBO - The parliamentary elections of May 25th, evidently had the lowest voter turnout of the past 15 years as less than 70 percent of the nation’s voters...
went to the polls despite improvements that were made to the electoral process. In 2015 and 2020 voter turnout was about 75 percent. Back in 2005 there was also an extremely low voter turnout namely 57 percent. That year the authorities had expected a voter turnout of at least 75 percent as that had been the percentage of the participation for the past ten years. Via social media scores of people expressed grave disappointment in politicians and in particular the leaders of the political parties. The emigration of voters who went abroad in search of a better future also contributed to the drop in the voter turnout. But government officials claim that all of these factors are just pure speculation until research has been conducted to back these claims up.
The deputy minister of Home Affairs, Maurits Hassankhan, has already asked for scientific research to determine the causes of the low voter turnout. The low voter turnout also had a huge impact on the elections as it changed the number of votes that were needed to reel in 1 parliamentary seat. Officials initially calculated that each candidate for parliament would need about 5,300 to be elected but due to the low voter turnout this number dropped. Another shocking fact is that
40 people who were on the lists of candidates from various political parties evidently only reeled in 1 vote. This means that not even their relatives, friends, coworkers, neighbors or partners voted for them. People from all over the country could vote for candidates from other districts as part of the new electoral system but these candidates did not manage to reel in votes nationwide. These candidates could not convince their relatives, friends, coworkers, neighbors or partners to vote for them. One of the candidates who only got one vote expressed his disappointment over the fact that his own housemates did not vote for him. “Not even my housemates voted for me,” said the candidate in disbelief.
