PARAMARIBO – Social Affairs and Housing (Sozavo) Minister Diana Pokie recently made it clear that the government has not issued an official call to citizens to get registered for a house.

She gave this statement in response to the commotion that was triggered by fake flyers on social media. Minister Pokie expects the government to commence with the registrations at the end of March or at the start of April. Citizens will be told where and when to go to the registration centers. She explained that after President Jennifer Simons had talked about the plans for housing and the housing fund, many people started showing up at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Housing. Fake flyers which mentioned the housing project also went viral on social media. Minister Pokie made it clear that the flyers with pictures of the president and the chairman of parliament were neither issued by the Ministry of Housing nor Stichting Volkshuisvesting. “There was no official call from the government for registrations,” said Minister Pokie who added that unknown people are trying to confuse the nation with fake news. Minister Pokie urged the nation to only rely on official news from the ministry and the government.
