Trump signs order targeting 'birth tourism'

US - US President Donald Trump signed another executive order targeting birthright citizenship, claiming some people exploit it by entering the country as tourists while intending to give birth.

Times of Suriname

Trump told reporters the previous system "made a joke out of" citizenship, and his close advisor Stephen Miller said the order would also deny citizenship to children of foreign terrorist organization members and people lobbying on behalf of foreign governments.

This marks Trump's second attempt at restricting birthright citizenship. His earlier executive order - which denied automatic citizenship to children of parents in the US illegally or on temporary visas - was blocked by lower courts and struck down by the Supreme Court in late June, a ruling Trump called "very unfortunate". The Court's majority opinion, authored by Chief Justice John Roberts, upheld the 14th Amendment's Citizenship Clause, which grants citizenship to nearly everyone born on US soil. The amendment states that "all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens". The administration had argued the amendment - passed after the Civil War to address the citizenship of former slaves - does not apply to undocumented migrants or visitors. The administration maintains that those in the country illegally or on visas are not "subject to the jurisdiction" of the US. The effort is part of Trump's broader anti-immigration agenda, which includes deporting millions of undocumented migrants and removing deportation protections for nationals of more than a dozen countries.
