War in the Middle East: updates

PARIS - Here are the latest developments in the Middle East war:

Iran
Launched multiple missile barrages toward Israel on Tuesday, with Iranian state media (IRIB) claiming some missiles penetrated Israel’s air defenses. A prior strike hit a building in northern Israel; search-and-rescue teams were deployed, and a loud blast was heard over Jerusalem. Israel struck an IRGC site in Tehran, reportedly used to direct Basij paramilitary units — part of a broader campaign targeting Iran’s internal security apparatus.

Israel
Conducted airstrikes in Beirut’s southern suburbs, targeting Hezbollah infrastructure after issuing evacuation warnings. Confirmed a malfunction in its “David’s Sling” interceptor system, which allowed two Iranian ballistic missiles to strike southern Israel — wounding dozens over the weekend. Announced it had killed top Basij leadership, including intelligence chief and commander Gholamreza Soleimani, aiming to weaken the Iranian regime’s domestic control.

Iraq
A US strike in western Iraq killed Saad Dawai al-Baiji, senior Hashed al-Shaabi (PMF) commander in Anbar, along with several fighters. The group blamed US forces. Separately, an Iraqi armed faction launched seven Arash-4 rockets from Iraq into northeastern Syria, hitting a Syrian army base in Hassakeh — claimed by an anonymous Iraqi official.

Syria
Syrian army confirmed its northeastern base was struck by rockets fired from Iraq, consistent with the Iraqi official’s account.

United States
Former President Donald Trump announced he had shelved plans to attack Iranian power plants, citing “very good” talks with unnamed Iranian officials aimed at ending the war. Netanyahu stated Trump believes military gains by Israel and the US can be converted into a negotiated agreement safeguarding Israel’s vital interests.

Pakistan
PM Shehbaz Sharif spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian about the “grave situation in the Gulf region”, pledging Pakistan’s commitment to playing a “constructive role in advancing peace.”

United Kingdom
UK Foreign Office summoned Iran’s ambassador over “reckless and destabilising actions”, following charges under the National Security Act against two individuals (an Iranian national and a British-Iranian dual national) suspected of aiding a foreign intelligence service. (Bssnews)
