PARAMARIBO – The local entrepreneurs who are tasked with delivering food to the jail houses for detainees on a daily basis recently complained that they haven’t received...

any payment for their services for the past six months. They also pointed out that there still is no valid contract with the Ministry of Justice and Police which is why payments can’t be processed. The entrepreneurs therefore called in President Jennifer Simons to address the issue personally. They explained that they have repeatedly tried to get some answers from the Ministry of Justice and Police but that their attempts were futile. “We keep making deliveries because we do not want the detainees to pay the price but we can no longer keep this up financially”, said one of the suppliers. “If there is no contract, we will not get paid even though we have paid the costs for food, transport and personnel from our own pocket.” Several suppliers pointed out that they had no other choice than to go to private loan sharks for loans but that they will have to pay high interest rates. Some suppliers have no other choice than to call it quits if they do not receive payment soon.
