MP Sapoen calls macho statement of EBS director “unacceptable”

PARAMARIBO - The director of the Energy Company Suriname (EBS), Leo Brunswijk, recently stated that “the National Assembly should keep its big mouth shut instead of criticizing the state company.”

MP Raymond Sapoen (NDP) strongly condemned this “unacceptable statement” and made it clear that the shareholder of the energy company namely the state cannot remain silent after the director slammed parliament. However, his call did not encourage the government and the other members of parliament  to also condemn the macho statement that was made by Brunswijk. Brunswijk made it clear that legislators must keep their big mouth shut because parliament has failed to pay the electrical bills. MP Sapoen made it clear that payment of the electrical bills is not tied to the constitutional role of parliament to keep an eye on the government and state companies. He also deemed it inappropriate for a director who was appointed by the state to talk about the people’s representatives in such a manner. “Nobody is untouchable in this country. Not even the director of the EBS,” said MP Sapoen. The chairman of parliament,  Ashwin Adhin, did not directly respond to the statement made by Brunswijk but pointed out that parliament would try to find out if there is any truth to the statement that it does not pay its electrical bills. He explained that parliament has already sent a letter regarding this matter to the minister of Finance and Planning. Chairman  Adhin wants to know where the electrical bills of parliament are registered and what the current status is. “If I do not receive an answer, I will send another letter to the minister,” said Adhin. The government also did not respond to the machi statement made by the EBS director. Vice President  Gregory Rusland pointed out that the issue would be vieuwed closely and that the government would address it another time.
